Unforgiveness is defined by Webster as 'Reluctant or refusing to forgive'. To grasp a deeper understanding of 'unforgiveness' we should understand what the opposite definition is. Forgiveness is defined as:
1.To excuse for a fault or an offense; pardon.
2 To renounce anger or resentment against.
3. To absolve from payment of (a debt, for example).
When I read that it dawned on me about the 'unforgiveness' that God had towards us as the human race. We had commitment an offense against God (sin). Secondly God, anger burns towards sin. People don't understand that God's natural response about sin is anger. Thirdly as sinners we are in debt to God. Human unforgiveness in some cases is merciless and unpardonable. It reminds me of a recent event in my life when I was asked to do a job for this person. I made a mistake that really upset her. All I can say is that she was really angry with me. I remembered really apologizing to her but the more I ask for her forgiveness the more she became indignant in her angry towards me. I ensured her I didn't take her feelings lightly for being upset with me. I even offered some kind of retribution to make it up to her but she insisted in her anger and our relationship came to an immediate end. For days I really anguished over what had happened. Then I realized that it is amazing that God's unforgiveness is NOT like ours. Having understood that, my heart was moved how God can still love us while we are still sinners (1John 4:19). God gave his son as a sacrifice for our sins. Wow, what a sacrifice! If God could find enough love to forgive my sins why shouldn't I forgive those who have wronged me? Unforgiveness is dark, cold and lonely. The motive to forgive someone is not to release that person from their responsibility of their offense but to duplicate the godly forgiveness God showed us by giving us his son as a sacrifice for our sins. When we do that we come to know the personality and heart of God. If you harbor any unforgiveness towards anyone just think how much God loves you and let that be the motivation that releases you from it.
