Sgt. Roy's Moments

The Lady in the back of the room

There is this woman that comes to my fitness class every Friday morning and she stands in the back of the room. . I have seen her many times before. Throughout the years we have exchange pleasantries. I just found out from a friend that she is struggling with brain cancer. From what I know of her she is a mother of two young boys. Since returning from Iraq I’ve been told that she will purpose herself to get up every Friday morning just to come see me. When I heard this I was just moved in my emotions. I respect her right to privacy by not making a fuss over her in class. I am so inspired by her courage to face each day with these circumstances. One morning I did get to give her a hug and tell her that I appreciate her. Still I feel this is just a small expression of my true feelings. I want to cry with her but I know she won’t accept my pity for her. Just to be the catalyst to motivate her to wake up every Friday morning to participate in my 6:00 kickboxing class will have to do for now. I’m also impressed by her tenacity to live each day as if it’s her last day on earth. I wonder how we all would live knowing that tomorrow isn’t promised to us.

So lady in the back of the room, thank you. I will pray for you and your family. You are truly a hero to me. Thank you for inspiring me. When you think your situation is bad this only proves to me that there are people out there who struggle with much worse. I know I will see her this coming Friday and you bet I will give my best because I know that she will give her best just to be there. I won't let her down.
