I did something that I haven't done in a long time. I went to a popular dance club with some of my army buddies. As sat there with the music blasting in a smoke filled room I observed several things. I saw the people dancing. I know I have been out of touch with the club scene for years, but what I saw appalled me. I saw young girls dancing provocatively with each other. Their movements were very graphic and sexual in nature. I noticed that most of the males stood around the dance floor just watching. Back in the disco days when I went out dancing that was always an advantage to me because when there were more females on the dance floor that meant I could get someone to dance with me.
As the night went on the DJ continued to play various songs. As soon as a song would finish another was started and if the song was popular the crowd on the dance floor would confirm their approval by shouting out a slight cheer. The bar was located in the back of the club behind the dance floor, so that as people finished dancing they could refresh themselves. I won't tell you the specifics of where I was but let's just put it this way, the girls there were old enough to be my daughter! So the whole night I sat there on a stool and bopped my head to the music sucking on my free designated driver coke.
As the evening went on young girls would approached me and asked me the usual customary questions like, "where are you from?" and "what do you do?" It was no surprise to me that all of them were heavily intoxicated. Honestly I don't get that much attention from women unless I'm on the aerobic floor.
There was one young lady that caught my attention. She had to be about 24 years old. She had dark hair, olive skin and I couldn't tell because of the darkness of the room but I guess she had green eyes. She looked like a young Angelina Joli. She was beautiful. There were several guys around her just beckoning for her attention. She was standing me at one of the tables dancing and sipping her drink all at the same time. Occasionally she would pull away from the table and begin 'dirty dancing' with one of the guys that huvered around her. When the song was finished she would turn back around and resume sipping her drink.
It was in a odd moment that our eyes caught each other. She smiled at me and moved over to my direction. "Hello" she said as smiled her Angelina Joli smile at me. I returned the greeting and as time went on we engaged ourselves in an interesting conversation.
She began to share with me the story of her life. Here was a girl who appeared to not have a problem in the world was in acually a 23 years old mother of 2 children, who became pregnant at 16 and a former battered wife. She also revealed her disatisfacation of the club scene and how desperately wanted someone to love her. As she said that tears began to well up in her eyes. The alcohol was wearing off and I could see the frustration that she had grown accustomed to living with was coming back to her face.
I took her hand and right there in that noisy club I began to tell her about the goodness of God and what He has done in my life. I told her about my family and life in Christ. She managed to smile at the thought that she too could possess the same joy that I had. We talked for at least for 30 minutes, which is an eternity in a dance club. When we finished our conversation I looked up and noticed the three guys whose hormones that were out of control for her and her girlfriend were all staring at us.
Judging by the looks on the faces they were annoyed that we were having that sort of conversation. Personally I think there were mad that they couldn't have the person she was 30 minutes ago. That was a person who had no hope and who was medicating herself to numb the pain. I told the young lady that God wants the best for her. That the love of Godis the BEST love she could ever want. God has ordered her footsteps and this place is NOT the place to be to find it.
That night I felt like I gave the devil a black eye! I didn't care if the whole club was mad at me. God had His hands around this young lady. God orchestrated 'faith in a strange place' at that moment. That time was picked for us to meet and for me to talk about the good news our Jesus Christ.
It was getting late and this old guy had to get home. I motioned farewell to the young lady with a promise to pray for her. My friends and I left the club with our hearing impaired and the smell of cigarette smoke on our clothes. I never felt so honored to be used in that way. If you are looking for God make no bones about it, God is there for you! He can meet you right where you are. Even in a dance club!
